Introducing the Sonic 108: High‑Speed Robot for 50+ Ton Injection Molding Machines

At the upcoming Fakuma trade fair (Oct. 12–16, Friedrichshafen, Germany, Hall B1, Booth No. 1204), Wittmann Battenfeld will showcase the new Sonic 108 robot, extending the Sonic series launched at K2019.

The Sonic 108 targets injection‑molding machines rated at 50 tons and above, filling the gap left by earlier models that served only 150–500 ton machines. Its fixed demolding axis keeps the robot’s movement strictly within the mold cavity, preventing any axis components from protruding toward the injection unit. Wittmann Battenfeld notes that this “substantially simplifies” the enclosure, especially behind the machine’s fixed clamp. The result is a compact, CE‑compliant cell with minimal overhangs and a streamlined control cabinet.

Optimized for rapid part removal in packaging and pick‑and‑place applications, the Sonic 108 delivers cycle times below 4 seconds, with in‑/out times kept under 0.9 seconds. The drive‑system concept was completely re‑engineered to achieve these performance metrics. The robot can lift payloads up to 2 kg and offers horizontal strokes of up to 1 500 mm and vertical strokes of up to 1 000 mm.
