SPI‑67: A Seamless Interface for Motoman Six‑Axis Robots and Injection Molding Presses

The Motoman Robotics division of Yaskawa America, Inc. has unveiled the SPI‑67 interface, a turnkey hardware and software solution that seamlessly connects six‑axis Motoman robots to horizontal injection molding presses.

SPI‑67: A Seamless Interface for Motoman Six‑Axis Robots and Injection Molding Presses

Prior to the SPI‑67, operators had to choose between an expensive external cabinet that lacked some integrated features, or painstakingly wiring the robot to the press’s I/O blocks—a process that demanded advanced expertise and risked costly errors.

The SPI‑67 is fully compliant with EuroMap 67 robot‑to‑press communication standards and U.S. SPI electrical interface guidelines. A rugged 50‑pin connector provides a robust physical link, while dual‑channel, redundant safety signals enable a direct connection to the press’s safety circuitry. The interface automatically exchanges essential handshaking data—door status, robot operating mode, and ejector position—ensuring synchronized operation.

Designed specifically for the GP‑Series and HC‑Series six‑axis Motoman robots, the SPI‑67 mounts directly inside the YRC‑1000 controller, eliminating the need for an additional cabinet. Its built‑in Direct Connect I/O cards expose the robot’s native 40 inputs and 40 outputs, and add valuable relay outputs for extended control.

Two spare dual‑channel safety contacts can be wired to external safety devices such as light curtains or safety scanners. Alternatively, they can be paired with the Functional Safety Unit (FSU) to provide dual‑channel, dry‑contact, safety‑rated outputs, giving operators full flexibility while maintaining compliance.
