Bosch Drives Industry‑Wide Standards with Software Contributions to the CVII

Since mid‑2020, Bosch has been a key contributor to the Vehicle Signal Specification (VSS) within the GENIVI/W3C Common Vehicle Interface Initiative (CVII). VSS standardizes the terminology and semantics of vehicle signals, ensuring uniformity across the software stack.

The automotive industry's shift toward software‑centric vehicles is reshaping development paradigms. Three weeks ago, Bosch announced its software‑defined car initiative, aiming to seamlessly integrate vehicles with cloud ecosystems. This transition elevates software—infotainment, driver assistance, connectivity—as the primary driver of customer value, replacing mechanical functions.

Collaborative ecosystems are essential. OEMs and suppliers increasingly recognize that shared data models and APIs enable cost‑effective innovation. Building an industry‑wide technology stack for interoperable vehicle data is critical amid evolving cloud platforms.

Programs like GENIVI/W3C CVII are pivotal in defining vehicle technology. By adopting open standards, manufacturers avoid vendor lock‑in and accelerate value‑added services.

Bosch champions open standards and shared platforms. Beyond VSS and VSSo, Bosch has open‑source the Vehicle Edge and IoT Event Analytics platform under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. The IoT Event Analytics platform aggregates vehicle data and processes complex events in real time. The Vehicle Edge, built on Eclipse Kuksa.val and the new analytics platform, serves as a vehicle‑agnostic middleware that pre‑processes data at the source, enabling decentralized application development.

Bosch welcomes CVII’s mission to create a common vehicle‑data language and invites the open‑source community to adopt and extend the Vehicle Edge and IoT Event Analytics projects. We anticipate sharing best practices and advancing collaborative software development across the industry.
