Understanding Saw Tools: Types, Functions, and Applications

Sawing force

The driving force of the saw changes from time to time. It was initially driven by human power, and may also be powered by natural resources such as steam and water. With the development of technology, the source of sawing power can be electricity or other power sources. In addition to traditional sawing, there is another type of saw called an abrasive saw, which has a powered circular blade. Abrasive saw blades are designed to cut through metal or ceramics and have a higher accuracy than band sawing.

Bandsaw vs. circular saw

The traditional method evolved into a bandsaw, while the abrasive evolved into a circular saw method and corresponding equipment, or formally called a circular saw machine.

Pros and cons of the two models

This question has been repeatedly asked: Should I choose a bandsaw or a circular saw? In fact, it should be selected according to the cutting method and work piece type. The wrong choice will lead to a decline in productivity, which will make the long-term development of the factory face serious difficulties. Today, band saws are widely used in various fields. Band saws are particularly suitable for metalworking and woodworking, but can also be used to cut a variety of other materials.

Compared with the circular saw, the main advantages of the bandsaw include the uniform cutting movement due to the uniformly distributed tooth load on bandsaw blades, and the ability to cut irregular or curved shapes.

For large quantity

Industrial manufacturers that require mass production may choose circular cold saws as the best solution.

For fast processing

On the other hand, if there are no special tolerance requirements, then a lower-priced bandsaw may be sufficient. Due to technological advancement, the functional differences between circular saws and band saws are now quite blurred.

Sawing direction & bandsaw blades

Band saws can be used for very long work piece cutting tasks, such as construction steel or bar cutting. Band saws have both vertical and horizontal designs, both of which have different advantages. By definition, band saw machines are also called bandsaws. These are power-driven sawing machines with long and sharp bandsaw blades that consist of a continuous toothed metal band stretched between the wheels to cut the work piece. On the other hand, circular sawing machine use circular tools for sawing instead of sawing bands, so, circular sawing machine have unique processing characteristics.

The advantages and disadvantages of the two sawing models of band saws and circular saws are not absolute, but the results of comparisons between cost, quality and other variables.

Summary

Saws are commonly used to cut a variety of long and thick metal or wood materials, which was invented early in human history and can help workers cut large-scale wood, stone, castings and other important industrial materials. These cut materials are usually used for further processing. Saws are regarded as promoters of human civilization and can help modern industry develop with rough strength. Although there are many other cutting machines that can perform the same functions as saws today, the use of circular saws and band saws is still very common and popular in the market due to their relatively low price and convenience.
