Four Proven Strategies for Organizing Asset Hierarchies and Finding Assets Quickly
What is an asset hierarchy?
In a CMMS, assets are organized in a hierarchical tree—much like the folder structure on your computer. This visual arrangement mirrors the physical layout of your facility, allowing even non‑technical staff to find equipment simply by navigating the hierarchy.

Use asset categories to streamline searches
When you add equipment, assign both a physical location and an asset category (e.g., HVAC, Electrical). This dual classification gives you two powerful filtering options: by location or by asset type.

For instance, to find a “Twin Fan Set” you can drill down through Main Facility > Roof > Twin Fan Set—just three clicks. Alternatively, select “HVAC” from the category list and search within that subset.
Program your own asset tag or code
A clear asset labelling convention is critical when multiple units share the same name. Fiix lets you assign an Asset Code separate from the Asset Name, giving you a concise identifier that maintenance staff can interpret instantly.
You can add codes one by one, bulk‑import them via CSV, or program a convention through the API for future entries—providing flexibility for both manual and automated workflows.
Search across all fields for pinpoint accuracy
Fiix’s search engine queries multiple fields simultaneously, making it easy to locate a specific piece of equipment even in a large asset pool.
Suppose you need a particular CNC machine among 40 units scattered across the hierarchy. Start with “cnc”, then add details such as the description, make, or a serial number fragment to narrow the results.

By combining location drilling, category filtering, asset codes, and live search, you can quickly pinpoint the exact asset you need.
