CPI Maintenance Spending Rises: 2008 Turnarounds Exceed $521 M, Up 17% in H2
Plant owners in the Chemical Processing Industry (CPI) have consistently increased their focus on predictive and preventive maintenance. This strategy extends equipment life, reduces costly replacements, and delivers additional benefits such as lower emissions, fewer leaks, and improved operating efficiency.
Many CPI maintenance projects require plant downtime to access pressurized piping, heated vessels, and critical equipment—often halting downstream production or disrupting essential resources like steam and power.
Earlier this year, Industrial Info reported that planned CPI plant maintenance turnarounds for 2008 had already surpassed last year’s figures. According to the North American Project Database, more than 220 maintenance turnarounds are scheduled in the second half of the year, with an estimated value of $521 million—an increase of 17% in turnaround activity and a modest $8 million rise in spending compared to the first half.
Key upcoming turnarounds include several ethylene units in Texas, Louisiana, and Alberta. Ethylene units typically undergo major turnarounds every five to seven years, creating significant opportunities for equipment and service providers when these events occur.
Among the largest individual projects, Chevron Phillips Chemical’s low‑density polyethylene unit in Baytown, Texas, will undergo a nearly 30‑day turnaround. Sterling Chemicals Inc. plans a three‑ to four‑week maintenance shutdown of its acetic acid unit in Texas City during the third quarter.
In the face of current economic uncertainties, these maintenance turnarounds appear less susceptible to delays or cancellations than many capital projects. They are often essential for replacing depleted catalysts, completing code inspections, or meeting evolving compliance standards.
