Ensuring Your Training Truly Delivers: A Reliability Engineer’s Guide

Ensuring Your Training Truly Delivers: A Reliability Engineer’s Guide

Training forms the foundation of any role—no job can perform effectively without it. Over the years I’ve both attended and delivered a wide array of training programs, and the results have varied dramatically.

So the real question is: What type of training is essential for this position? Understanding that answer is critical to unlocking performance gains.

For reliability engineers, the stakes are high. We face a spectrum of failure modes, many of which stem from human error caused by inadequate or poorly targeted training. It’s tempting to say, “Just give them more training,” but that alone rarely resolves the root issue.

Effective training is not about pouring money into generic programs; it’s about selecting the right tool for the job. Just as a mechanic chooses the proper wrench for a bolt, we must match training content to the specific skills and knowledge gaps that exist.

Often reliability engineers step back until a human‑related failure surfaces. Yet operator mistakes can silently erode safety and reliability until they explode into costly incidents. We need a proactive approach.

One practical solution is to maintain a dedicated log of human‑related incidents, noting core deficiencies. That data then informs tailored training interventions that directly address the company’s most pressing needs.

When designing training programs, consider these dimensions:

Not all training is created equal. If a current program does not address identified issues, a deeper investigation should identify a more suitable option. Conversely, if training already exists, it must be reviewed to ensure it remains the most effective solution.

Reliability engineers are uniquely positioned to influence trades, tooling, and parts selection for maintenance. Why not extend that expertise to the training that supports these areas? By integrating reliability insight into training design, we can build a workforce that consistently meets safety and performance goals.
