Luke Franta: 23‑Year‑Old ASE‑Certified Automotive Expert & Founder of Two Successful Repair Shops

In an era where highly skilled automotive technicians are both in great demand and short supply, Luke Franta stands out as a true source of inspiration for the next generation of mechanics.

At only 23, Luke is not just an ASE‑certified technician; he is also the founder of two thriving businesses—Franta’s Auto Care and Franta’s Automotive—and personally provides vehicle service and sales in Atascadero, California.

Beginning his journey at 18, Luke’s rapid accumulation of knowledge and hands‑on experience over just five years is remarkable.

To achieve ASE certification, Luke mastered the intricate mechanics, systems, parts, and tools of modern automobiles and trucks. His learning came from a blend of formal education, extensive reading, instructional YouTube videos, and real‑world experience at his local shop.

Luke’s story demonstrates that age is no barrier when pursuing a passion and building a professional career.

WHAT IS ASE CERTIFICATION?

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supplying the automotive repair industry with knowledgeable, skilled, and trustworthy technicians. Its certifications set a national standard of excellence across dealerships, service centers, and repair shops.

While ASE certification is not mandatory for working in auto repair, most technicians seek it because the credential builds customer confidence and can accelerate career advancement.

THE PROCESS TO EARN ASE CERTIFICATION

Preparing for the ASE certification exams typically requires a minimum of two years of combined classroom instruction and on‑the‑job training.

Both theoretical knowledge and practical experience are essential for passing the exams; hands‑on work alone is insufficient.

After registration, candidates schedule a test at a local ASE testing center—available in cities across all fifty states.

Exam day presents a rigorous challenge, as candidates face a panel of industry veterans. It is common for about one third of test takers to need a second attempt.

Successful candidates receive a five‑year validity period before recertification is required, ensuring continued competence throughout their careers.

ASE CERTIFICATION TRAINING AT UTI

Universal Technical Institute’s (UTI) automotive technology program is master‑certified by ASE. The curriculum is specifically designed to prepare students for the certification exams by offering comprehensive classroom instruction and extensive hands‑on training in fully equipped automotive labs.

Laboratory work at UTI can satisfy one of the two years of required on‑the‑job experience for ASE certification.
