OpenHW Group Launches CORE‑V Family of Open‑Source Processor Cores
OpenHW Group, a newly formed not‑for‑profit global organization, is driving the next wave of open‑source processor development. By creating a collaborative platform and providing freely available processor core IP, the group aims to accelerate adoption and ecosystem growth.
Founded by Rick O’Connor, who previously served as Executive Director of the RISC‑V Foundation, OpenHW has already attracted 13 sponsor organizations—including Alibaba, Bluespec, CMC Microsystems, Embecosm, ETH Zurich, GreenWaves, Imperas, Metrics, Mythic AI, NXP, Onespin, Silicon Labs, and Thales. The organization plans to grow its membership to 25 by the end of 2019.
OpenHW is a member of the RISC‑V Foundation and has entered into a strategic partnership with the Eclipse Foundation, a leading global community for open‑source software collaboration and innovation. These alliances reinforce the group’s commitment to delivering high‑quality, open‑source processor cores for developers of processor designs, SoCs, and hardware‑software teams worldwide.
The advent of open instruction set architectures such as RISC‑V has sparked renewed interest in open‑source processor development. OpenHW Group is positioned to raise awareness, deepen understanding, and expand the availability of open‑source processor implementations for organizations across the globe.
