PTC Recognized as IoT World Awards Finalist, Driving Industrial AR Innovation

Boston‑based PTC, founded in 1985 as Parametric Technology Corporation, evolved from a pioneering parametric CAD vendor into a global leader in industrial IoT and augmented reality. The company’s journey began with the original “Pro/Engineer” platform, later renamed Creo, which revolutionized 3‑D digital design. By 1995 PTC had joined the Fortune 500, and in 1998 it was the first to launch internet‑based product lifecycle management software.

Strategic acquisitions bolstered PTC’s core offerings: in 2010 the firm shortened its name to PTC, acquired IoT platform ThingWorx in 2013, and added Qualcomm’s Vuforia AR suite in 2015. These moves positioned PTC at the forefront of IoT and AR, earning the company finalist status in the IoT World Awards and top rankings in Forrester and Gartner industrial IoT platform reports. CEO James E. Heppelmann proudly noted that “we’ve been number one or tied for number one in every IIoT report ever written.”

PTC’s enduring expertise lies in bridging the digital and physical realms—a theme reflected in its logo, which shows a digital and physical hand coming together. “We started by digitally defining things with CAD and PLM tools,” the CEO explained, “and that definition is now embedded in the physical world, generating data that the IoT captures and analyzes.”

Beyond ThingWorx, PTC’s IoT portfolio includes KEPServerEX, a connectivity platform operating at over 75,000 sites. It supports a broad spectrum of industrial devices and securely translates legacy protocols into SSL/TLS‑compliant streams.

In augmented reality, PTC has expanded its Vuforia offering with the Vuforia Expert Capture system. Designed to preserve the knowledge of seasoned technicians, the tool lets experts perform tasks while wearing digital eyewear—recording video, taking photos, and annotating steps. The captured content is then refined and shared as interactive SOP guides accessible on Microsoft HoloLens, HoloLens 2, RealWear HMT‑1, smartphones, and tablets.

Expert Capture addresses the aging manufacturing workforce. With the U.S. manufacturing median age at 44 in 2018, many veterans are retiring, taking invaluable tacit knowledge with them. PTC’s system captures this expertise in three phases: (1) record; (2) enhance; (3) disseminate. Global Foundries, for example, reported a tenfold reduction in SOP documentation time and a 50% cut in training duration during a trial.

PTC’s ecosystem‑first philosophy is evident in its broad AR support, “we’re offering all the options across the entire AR waterfront,” said VP of Augmented Reality Products Mike Campbell. This comprehensive approach has made PTC the preferred partner for enterprises seeking scalable, interoperable IoT and AR solutions.
