Sierra Wireless Introduces Octave: A Unified Edge‑to‑Cloud Solution for Industrial IoT

The industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) remains highly fragmented, with many vendors offering platforms that struggle to meet evolving enterprise demands. Gartner reports that only about 15% of industrial companies have deployed an on‑premise IIoT platform this year. Meanwhile, a survey by IoT World Today revealed that 71% of respondents across industries find it difficult to adopt a platform that meets their current needs, a figure that climbs to 82% when considering future scalability.

In response to this market challenge, Sierra Wireless, a leading global wireless communications equipment provider, has launched Octave—an all‑in‑one edge‑to‑cloud IIoT platform. Octave is engineered to streamline every stage of an IoT deployment: from device connectivity and SIM management to data filtering, event processing, and integration with major enterprise clouds such as Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure, and SAP.

According to Olivier Pauzet, Vice President and General Manager of Sierra Wireless’s IoT solutions business line, only one in four IoT projects achieve success. “IoT is often the top priority for our customers, yet the complexity remains a barrier,” Pauzet explains.

The breadth of a modern IIoT platform is vast: it must address a fragmented communications landscape, robust cybersecurity, comprehensive device management, and seamless cloud connectivity. While advanced analytics and machine learning have accelerated progress for data‑rich organizations, many industrial players still grapple with the foundational layers—modules, gateways, connectivity services, and data handling.

Octave’s strategy is not to be a “one‑size‑fits‑all” solution but to simplify core processes while integrating smoothly with other platforms. This approach enables customers to accelerate IIoT projects and allows ecosystem partners to deliver cloud services to end users.

Axibio, a leader in organic waste management, partnered with Sierra Wireless to leverage Octave in redefining its business model. Chairman Pierre‑André Galy noted, “With Sierra Wireless Octave, we didn’t need to invest resources in building IoT infrastructure. The platform’s streamlining allowed us to focus on developing our web application.” This shift helped Axibio transition from equipment manufacturing to a service‑oriented model.

To validate Octave’s impact, Sierra Wireless commissioned Forrester Research to evaluate its performance. The study concluded that organizations using Octave can complete an IoT project up to 12 months faster than those piecing together separate solutions, while also reducing overall project costs by an average of 42%.
