Qualcomm Unveils Expanded IoT Connectivity Platform at CES 2017

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017 in Las Vegas, Qualcomm introduced significant upgrades to its IoT Connectivity Platform, promising a “virtually seamless” experience across an array of devices and technologies.

For the first time, the platform supports simultaneous use of Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, CSRmesh, and 802.15.4‑based technologies. This expansion unlocks a broad spectrum of solutions that were previously incompatible with Qualcomm’s infrastructure.

The IoT Connectivity Platform already includes a diverse suite of communication protocols, cloud services, and software frameworks. Adding these new networking standards positions Qualcomm’s platform as a potential universal translator for IoT developers.

Streamlining IoT Network Development

By consolidating critical technologies, protocols, and standards onto a single platform, Qualcomm aims to reduce the complexity of building IoT networks and mitigate fragmentation challenges for manufacturers and developers alike.

“The Qualcomm Network continues to redefine connected experiences by making connectivity simple, high quality, and consistent across devices and technologies,” said Gopi Sirineni, Vice President of Product Management at Qualcomm. “The IoT Connectivity platform is designed to deliver on that promise by directly addressing the most fundamental connectivity challenges of IoT.”

Qualcomm is emulating its success in the mobile arena by creating an ecosystem that supplies third parties with the essential groundwork. While its influence in the IoT sector isn’t yet on par with its mobile dominance, the continual addition of networks and standards could herald a comparable turnaround in the coming years.
