S4x20: Shaping the Future of Industrial IoT Cybersecurity

The threat landscape for the industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and critical infrastructure is evolving faster than ever. Our Talos threat research team now uncovers more IoT‑centric vulnerabilities on a regular basis than traditional IT flaws, underscoring the urgency for robust defense.

While preparing for S4x20 in Miami, I’ve reflected on how awareness of these risks has surged. The inaugural S4 event took place in January 2007—13 years ago—when the community was already ahead of its time. By 2020, leading vendors such as Cisco recognized the need for specialized skills and tools to safeguard IIoT, and we are proud to share how we’re meeting that challenge.

S4’s mission is to “Nurture and grow a community of talent that is creating the future of OT and IICS security through bold and innovative thinking and action.” Since joining S4 in 2014, I’ve seen the organization consistently deliver on that promise. Its rapid growth speaks to the growing demand for research and idea exchange, and Cisco’s sponsorship confirms its central role in advancing IIoT security.

On the main stage this year, Vikas Butaney, Cisco’s Vice President of Product Management, IoT, will outline how to govern data from the edge to the multi‑cloud. He will examine the intersection of security, data governance, and control, highlighting how vendors and integrators can leverage data to deliver cloud‑based services without compromising protection.

I’m also thrilled to share Cisco’s strategy behind the acquisition of Sentryo and how our IoT solutions reinforce our IIoT cybersecurity roadmap.
