Developer-Friendly Frameworks Drive IoT Success, Says Rigado Startup
SAN JOSE, Calif. – In the nascent commercial IoT market, a startup specializing in Bluetooth gateways is positioning itself to accelerate adoption of Bluetooth mesh networking beyond lighting applications. Rigado is also urging chip manufacturers to enhance their open‑source stack management.
The company’s mission is to deliver solutions for asset tracking and smart buildings, where current IoT frameworks and end‑to‑end solutions are still lacking. “The industry still lacks ubiquitous gateways and IT professionals who fully grasp IoT,” said co‑founder and CTO Justin Rigling.
Rigado focuses on software that makes Bluetooth‑based IoT deployments approachable for mainstream developers. The team has extended the BlueZ Linux Bluetooth stack with new APIs that support Python, Node.js, and other popular languages.
“Python is the lingua franca for many developers,” Rigling noted. “Only a small percentage use Embedded C; most prefer Java, C#, or JavaScript. We package our system like a containerized app, simplifying the developer experience.”
The gateways also integrate with cloud‑based IoT platforms such as Amazon Greengrass, Microsoft Azure Edge, and ClearBlade. “These consoles let users build JavaScript applications and deploy agents on our gateway—much like AWS Lambda,” he added.
Delivering reliable, low‑level software is essential. “Silicon vendors sometimes fall short because they maintain separate forks of open‑source stacks,” Rigling said. “When Linux evolves, those forks lag behind, missing critical updates.”
