To future‑proof the National Health Service (NHS), the UK Health Secretary unveiled a Long‑Term Plan that will keep the service running smoothly for the next decade. As Healthcare Director EMEA at Zebra Technologies, Wayne Miller explains how national experts, patient groups and frontline staff collaborated to map out the deployment of the £20 billion (£20 bn, €22.8 bn) that Theresa May pledged in 2018.
While the finer details are still being finalized, the plan’s core investment strategy centres on technology—regarded as the keystone of the modern healthcare revolution. Technology is not a novelty for the NHS; the service has already begun replacing legacy paper systems with digital solutions that boost efficiency, cut repetitive admin work, enhance safety and free clinicians to spend more time with patients.

Championing Patient Safety
Patient safety remains the NHS’s top priority. When Leeds Teaching Hospital asked Zebra Technologies how technology could strengthen its safety strategy, we introduced the Scan4Safety initiative.
By installing digital printers and barcoded wristbands, the hospital now tracks patients throughout their journey with a robust patient‑identification system. The solution delivers far greater reliability and safety, ensuring every clinical record is updated in real time.
Early projections suggest the initiative could save lives and deliver up to £1 billion (€1.14 million) in cost savings to the NHS over seven years.
Prioritising Patient Care
Clinicians often report that administrative burdens eat into the time they can devote to patients. Lancashire NHS Hospital Trust recognised this and partnered with Zebra to deploy hand‑held mobile computers for consumable inventory management.
The system integrates wristband scanning whenever a consumable or implant is used, automatically updating records, reducing human error, and accelerating processing speeds.
As a result, the Trust achieved £5 million (€5.7 million) in balance‑sheet savings and, more importantly, gave doctors more time to focus on patient care.
Optimising Inventory & Stock Control
When Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust modernised its inventory system, Zebra handheld scanners were introduced to log usage, trace products, and trigger automatic replenishment.
The integration cut the time physicians spent on manual stock updates and slashed ordering time for head‑and‑neck surgery supplies by 84%.
Beyond time savings, the system eliminated stock obsolescence, reduced wastage, minimized storage requirements, and improved overall patient safety. Such outcomes underscore why tech expertise must accompany the NHS’s Long‑Term Plan.
Technology has already saved countless lives and will continue to do so as the NHS adopts more advanced solutions. By reducing administration and elevating patient care, these innovations will weave together a truly integrated national healthcare network—realising the vision of the 10‑Year Plan.
