Data Pitch Accelerator Launches Start‑ups Innovating Parking, Wearable Cardiac Monitoring, and More

Featuring Prof. Elena Simperl, the Data Pitch 2nd Cohort welcomes 29 innovative startups.

While media often focus on corporate giants, Jeremy Cowan reminds us that true innovation frequently originates from nimble startups.

Indeed, the most compelling tech often springs from startups—sometimes from just two founders in a garage. This week, we applaud Data Pitch for showcasing additional successful startups during a celebratory event at London’s Google Campus.

The €7.1 million, three‑year Data Pitch programme—backed by the European Commission—is now entering its final year. It presents a series of data‑driven challenges that agile startups tackle by partnering with data providers from business and the public sector.

This year’s cohort features 29 companies, including a wearable patch that uses biosignals and machine learning to detect cardiac conditions and sleep disorders; a firm that applies data to inform energy strategy; an online platform that measures and manages sustainable farming practices; a telematics provider that boosts fleet efficiency and integrates electric vehicles; and a startup that optimises renewable energy generation performance.

With 47 companies in total, each startup receives up to €100,000 in equity‑free funding, expert mentorship, investment prospects, and access to data from established businesses and public sector partners. The cohort will join the next accelerator from April to September 2019.

Key data partners include the UK’s Met Office, Konica Minolta, Greiner, Altice, the University of Dundee’s GROW Observatory, Jose de Mello Saúde, MASAI, and a global financial services provider.

In addition to the specific challenges posed by data partners, the programme features seven sector‑focused challenges covering automotive, smart transport, energy, finance, pharmaceuticals, telecoms, and privacy & consent.

Professor Elena Simperl, Director of the Data Pitch project at the University of Southampton, noted that the first cohort of 18 startups, which graduated in July 2018, has already generated over €6 million in sales, investment, and efficiency gains. Their achievements illustrate the potential of data‑enabled business models.

Simperl added that Data Pitch demonstrates the value of a trusted, experimental environment that mitigates risk for both private and public organisations. The insights gained help shape future innovation programmes and the policies that support them by identifying bottlenecks, required resources, and effective toolkits.

‘We sought to explore how collaboration can unlock ideas and solutions that would otherwise be unattainable,’ Simperl said. ‘As we enter the final year, it is vital to learn from the process, integrate those lessons into the programme, and share best practices for fostering data innovation across Europe.’

The event also hosted a panel discussion featuring academics, industry leaders, and government representatives. They explored lessons learned, the benefits of the Data Pitch model, and the challenges it faces, highlighting the importance of shared data for innovation and policy.
