Fibreworks Unveils Composite Factory for Aerospace & Defense Components
High-performance motorsports and Formula 1 composites fabricator Fibreworks Composites (Mooresville, N.C., U.S.) is launching a new sister company, Composite Factory, also based in Mooresville, that will focus on manufacture of complex components and assemblies for aerospace and defense applications.
Fibreworks Composites is a vertically integrated fabricator that offers design and development, tooling, fabrication and finishing services to top teams in NASCAR, Formula 1 and globally to OEM customers. The company specializes in use of hand-laid carbon fiber prepreg to produce multi-material co-molded assemblies, high-temperature parts, complex geometry components with Class A interior surfaces, and multi-component bonded assemblies.
Composite Factory, currently being stood up in a 22,500-square-foot facility, will leverage that same expertise for the design and fabrication of build-to-print, quick-turn prototype and pre-production parts for aerospace and defense applications. Composite Factory, which is working on its ISO AS9100 certification, will share administration, finance, design engineering and machining services with Fibreworks Composites, but will offer its own composites fabrication equipment. These include a 9-by-13-foot BondTech (Somerset, Ky., U.S.) autoclave and a 60 inches wide by 25 feet long Gerber Technology (Tolland, Conn., U.S.) cutting table.
Scott Kratzer, VP of business development for Composite Factory, is working with Fibreworks Composites leaders Joe Hofmann, COO, and Guenther Steiner, CEO, to establish operations at the new firm. Kratzer says Composite Factory employees will number about 20 and are currently being trained at Fibreworks Composites before transferring to the new facility.
Kratzer says the breadth and depth of the companies’ machining capacity allows it to offer soft or hard tools production for the fabrication of highly dimensionally tolerant composite parts. Hofmann notes that Fibreworks Composites hopes to leverage good will established in the motorsports market into a strong aerospace and defense presence: “We’ve excelled at building relationships with our customers, and we are willing to grow with our customers.”
