Rory Craig Unveils Carbon‑Fiber Child Car Seat Prototype for Racing Enthusiasts
Rory Craig, a design student at the Art Center College of Design, has engineered a cutting‑edge carbon‑fiber child car seat prototype that blends lightweight construction with race‑inspired aesthetics.

The seat’s shell is composed of high‑strength carbon fiber, applied via a wet lay‑up process over a CNC‑milled foam core. The result is an ultra‑light yet rigid chassis that can adapt to a child’s growth. A single, removable pivot enables three distinct configurations: rear‑facing for infants, forward‑facing for toddlers, and a booster for older children. By integrating all three stages into one unit, owners avoid buying multiple seats as their child ages. The prototype remains a conceptual design and has not yet undergone full functional testing.
To match the racing theme, the seat incorporates Sparco race harnesses, while all plastic inserts and components were fabricated using rapid‑prototyping technologies. The interior is fully padded and detachable from the carbon shell for easy cleaning. Strategically placed perforations along the back allow harness tension to be fine‑tuned as the child grows.

Rory completed this prototype as part of a fourth‑term product‑design course, tasked with creating a “softgood” solution that complements the seat’s interior. Below are details he shared about development and estimated costs.
Rory branded the prototype as the “Sparco Wingman” seat and produced a promotional poster to accompany the concept.

During a recent visit to Monte Carlo, I spotted a mother in a Ferrari F430 with her infant seated in the passenger seat—an image that underscores the potential appeal of a race‑themed child seat for luxury‑car owners.
