Sicomin Introduces Advanced Bio‑Based Epoxy Resin Systems for Sustainable Composite Applications

Editor’s note: CompositesWorld received several new product and technology announcements ahead of JEC World 2020, which had been scheduled for March 3-5. Although that exhibition was postponed to May, CW is now publishing the announcements we received. This is one of them.

Bio-based epoxy resins supplier Sicomin (Châteauneuf les Martigues, France; Hall 6, Booth G43) is launching several new products available in industrial quantities for series production within the automotive, wind energy, civil engineering and marine sectors.

SGi 128 is a new innovative intumescent epoxy gelcoat that is said to be suited to fire-retardant coating applications for critical components found in the wind energy and civil engineering markets. SGi 128 gelcoat is produced with 38% of its carbon content coming from non-oil sources and is halogen-free. It provides fire protection for epoxy laminates and offers low smoke toxicity. Available with both fast and slow hardeners, this epoxy system is said to form a tougher and more waterproof part surface than is possible with traditional intumescent coatings. Sicomin’s SGi 128 is available in industrial volumes with short lead times and has been tested to EN 13501 (EUROCLASS B-S1-d0) and ASTM E84 (Class A).

SR GreenPoxy 28, the sixth product in the GreenPoxy range, a bio resin specifically formulated for high-pressure resin transfer molding (HP-RTM) processing. SR GreenPoxy 28 is a fast cycle, low toxicity, third-generation bio-based formulation aimed specifically at the HP-RTM molding processes used for both high performance automotive structural parts and aesthetic carbon fiber components. The new formulation has been optimized for fast production cycle times and superior mechanical performance and is said to be a suitable alternative to traditional resins for high-volume programs.

GreenPoxy InfuGreen 810 has reportedly low viscosity at room temperature and has been formulated to support manufacturers producing parts for mass production using injection or infusion techniques. Produced with 38% carbon content derived from plant-based origins, InfuGreen 810 holds the DNV GL certification providing extra assurance of the product’s quality, efficiency and safety standards.

Finally, the Top Clear range is a next-generation coating formulation with superior UV stability. Said to provide optimal surface finish for clear carbon and other varnished components, Top Clear is qualified and used in large volumes by the automotive industry. It is also said to reduce production cycle times as surface pinholes can be completely covered with two quick drying coats of material.
