PlantSwitch’s CompostZero Bioplastic to Debut at FIFA World Cup, Boosting Sustainability

SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles will showcase PlantSwitch’s CompostZero bioplastic for food‑service items during the upcoming FIFA World Cup, replacing conventional plastic forks, spoons, lids, plates and straws with a truly sustainable alternative.

CompostZero is a high‑performance polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) resin—an inherently biodegradable polymer produced through biotechnology. By harnessing bacterial fermentation of biomass such as rice husks, PlantSwitch can generate commercial quantities of PHA that match the performance of traditional plastics.

Because PHA is home‑compostable, it degrades without specialized equipment, yet it can be processed on standard plastic manufacturing lines. PlantSwitch currently serves as both supplier and converter, extruding and injection‑molding utensils, straws, lids and plates. The company is also developing a thermoforming resin and plans to launch extrusion coating for paper cups.

CEO Dillon Baxter explains that PlantSwitch’s vertical integration enables precise process refinement and cost control. "By managing everything from raw material to finished product, we can fine‑tune parameters and reduce waste," he says.

PHA operates under different temperature and pressure regimes than petrochemical polymers, so specialized expertise is required. Baxter notes, "We’ll provide hands‑on support to converters so they can seamlessly adopt the technology.”

While the resin can be colored, most users prefer its natural brown or green hue, which signals its compostable status and aligns with state regulations that favor identifiable colors for sorting. Baxter adds, "Our customers appreciate the natural look and the clarity it brings to sustainability efforts.”

Designing for the Worst: Bioplastic That Becomes Better Litter

CompostZero items are designed for home composting or municipal compost collection, both of which are becoming more common. Industrial composting facilities can break down PHA rapidly, but even if the products become litter, they biodegrade safely. "We’re preparing for the unlikely scenario of landfill or open‑air litter,” Baxter says.

When mislaid in the environment, CompostZero’s PHA is readily consumed by soil and aquatic microorganisms, ensuring that the material degrades without leaving persistent micro‑plastics. PlantSwitch claims the resin can meet shelf‑life requirements while still maintaining biodegradability, with crystallinity adjustments available for longer storage needs.

Baxter emphasizes, "Many alternatives exist, but few address the single‑use waste that ends up in the environment. CompostZero is engineered to solve that problem.”

PlantSwitch recently closed a $17 million Series A funding round, earmarking the majority of the capital for expanding production capacity. While the current focus remains on single‑use food‑service items, Baxter sees potential for broader applications in medical devices, consumer packaged goods and industrial packaging.
