AGC Introduces Fluon Fluoropolymers to Boost Thermoplastic Composite Performance
AGC Chemicals America, Exton, PA, announced a suite of Fluon fluoropolymer resins that deliver significant performance gains for thermoplastic composites. Demonstrated at the 2024 Composites and Advanced Materials Expo (CAMX) in Anaheim, these advanced materials promise enhanced strength, heat tolerance, adhesion, impact resistance, and flexibility.
Key Innovations
- mPEEK – A modified PEEK compound infused with specialty fluoropolymers that improves impact and wear resistance, flexibility, and electrical properties. mPEEK is available in sheets, rods, tubes, gears, liners, wire and cable insulations, and film, and it performs better under demanding operational conditions. Compared with standard PEEK, mPEEK offers superior processability in extrusion, injection, and compression molding and shows a lower dielectric constant at temperatures up to 260 °C.
- Fluon EA‑2000 Resin – A functionalized, high‑temperature adhesive polymer that enables one‑step processing with polymers and metals such as titanium and copper. EA‑2000 eliminates the need for surface treatment or a separate tie‑layer, maintains heat resistance up to 260 °C (500 °F), and delivers chemical resistance on par with conventional materials. It is ideal for continuous fiber‑reinforced thermoplastics (CFRTP) requiring high temperatures. In powder form, it can be blended into engineering thermoplastic matrices such as nylon to enhance flexibility, impact resistance, and reduce water absorption. EA‑2000 can also serve as the primary matrix resin for high‑temperature CFRTP when nylon or epoxy is unsuitable.
The specialized fluoropolymer technology underpinning both mPEEK and EA‑2000 is adaptable to other polymer systems, offering a pathway to further performance enhancements across a broad range of composite applications.
