NatureWorks and IMA Forge Strategic Partnership to Accelerate Compostable Coffee Pod Market

NatureWorks, the leading manufacturer of Ingeo® PLA bioplastic, has joined forces with IMA Coffee, a global pioneer in coffee handling, processing and packaging, to launch a multi‑year partnership aimed at accelerating the adoption of high‑performance, K‑Cup compatible compostable single‑serve coffee pods across North America.

The single‑serve coffee segment is under growing pressure to shift from conventional plastic capsules to truly sustainable solutions. Consumers value the convenience and quality of single‑serve pods, yet they increasingly reject the environmental cost of the waste they generate. Compostable capsules address this tension by diverting packaging from landfills and enabling the recovery of used coffee grounds, which can be composted to provide valuable nutrients to the final product.

Crafting a coffee capsule is a delicate engineering challenge. The capsule body, lid, and filter must be precisely engineered to deliver consistent flavor while withstanding assembly, filling, shelf life, and brewing stresses. By combining NatureWorks’ deep knowledge of compostable materials with IMA’s world‑class machinery and process expertise, the partnership will deliver a turnkey solution that enables manufacturers to produce high‑quality pods that can be composted at the end of their life.

“We’re seeing a surge in demand for compostable single‑serve pods from brand owners and roasters alike,” said Flavio Di Marcotullio, Global Industry Manager at NatureWorks. “Our partnership with IMA allows us to respond to consumer calls for sustainability and to circular‑economy directives that recognize compostable packaging as a key to recovering food waste.”

In 2019 IMA launched its No‑Plastic Program (NOP), a strategic initiative that promotes eco‑friendly alternatives to conventional plastic packaging in coffee production. Nicola Panzani, IMA Coffee Sales Manager and CEO of IMA Coffee Petroncini, explained, “NOP focuses on research, testing, and development of plastic‑free, compostable solutions. Through collaborations with partners, we drive the adoption of sustainable packaging across the coffee value chain.”

Central to this effort is IMA’s Open Lab, a network of laboratories and testing facilities dedicated to exploring new materials and optimizing production processes. Panzani added, “By integrating advanced digital infrastructure with think‑tank spaces and rapid prototyping, we bridge knowledge from machines, packaging manufacturers, and end users to create innovative, sustainable packaging solutions.”
