Advanced Pocket‑Hole Drilling Fixture: Precision, Speed, and Versatility
[This post was written by Carl Calabria, our Senior Vice President of Engineering]
Traditional woodworkers have long relied on dovetail and mortise‑and‑tenon joints for strong, lasting bonds that glue alone cannot provide. I’m one of those craftsmen, yet when speed takes precedence over formality, I turn to a pocket‑hole jig without hesitation.

The jig directs a specialized drill bit into the wood at a precise angle and depth. After the workpieces are temporarily clamped together, a screw is driven through the pocket hole, securing the joint in one swift operation. My original design—created over 15 years ago—utilised Kreg Tool Company components, a foot‑activated pneumatic cylinder to clamp the board, and a pneumatic drill to power the bit. The unit sat in my vise and worked with stock in the ¾″–1″ and 1½″–2″ ranges. Switching between those ranges required unscrewing and repositioning the cylinder—a tedious task.

To address these limitations, I re‑engineered the fixture for rapid adjustment and compatibility with boards up to 4″ thick. I also incorporated magnetic clamps so the jig can be mounted directly on a table saw, simplifying handling of long workpieces. The result is a hybrid construction: an MDF base for stability, extruded aluminum rails for smooth travel, and a 3‑D‑printed bracket made from nylon with embedded carbon fiber. The bracket integrates a right‑angle support for the cylinder, guides for the rail, and slots that allow it to be positioned anywhere along the guide—streamlining the build process.
