                  Rs= [Source voltage Vs) – operating voltage (Vz)]/ Iz

        where the formula to obtain Iz= Pz/Vz 

From the characteristics above, (Pz) power dissipation will be around 500mW, and the nominal voltage is 4.7V. Therefore; 

         Iz = 500/4.7

            =  ≃106mA.

The makes the Zener series resistor value to; 

         Rs = (12 -4.7)/106. As a result, the Zener series resistor’s value is around 680 ohms.
