What is an Asset Hierarchy?

In a CMMS, assets are arranged in a hierarchical structure—much like folders and files on a computer. This visual layout mirrors the physical arrangement in your facility, making it intuitive for anyone, even those new to the software, to locate an asset by simply drilling down the hierarchy.

Leverage Asset Categories

When adding equipment, assign both a physical location and an asset category. This dual filtering—by location and by asset type—provides two clear paths to find what you need. For example, to locate a "Twin Fan Set" HVAC unit, navigate Main Facility > Roof > Twin Fan Set in just a few clicks.

Alternatively, choose "HVAC" from the asset category list and search directly for the unit.

Create Custom Asset Tags/Code

A robust labeling convention is essential when multiple assets share the same name. Fiix lets you add an Asset Code—separate from the Asset Name—so maintenance staff can quickly distinguish between similar items. Asset codes can be entered manually, bulk‑imported via CSV, or generated programmatically through the API (for those with coding experience).
