Mastering Sinumerik 808D: CNC Coordination Systems Explained – Turning Series Part 6
As you have seen in previous videos of Sinumerik 808D Turning Video Tutorial Series that cnc lathe machine has been fully set up for component (cnc lathe jaws has been adjusted and all the necessary tool has been fasten in the tool turret).
CNC Coordination System Introduction
This video by Siemens describes CNC Coordination System MCS and WCS,
- Machine Zero Point or Machine Coordinate System (MCS)
- Workpiece Zero Point or Workpiece Coordinate System (WCS)
and where these zero points are located in CNC lathe machine.

Coordination System Introduction on Sinumerik 808D
Machine Zero Point (MCS)
Machine zero point is fixed by machine manufacturer and cannot be changed.
Workpiece Zero Point (WCS)
Workpiece zero point is set by cnc machinists, he can set this point on his will, but mostly Workpiece zero point is
located at workpiece front face.
All programming dimensions are taken from workpiece zero point when a cnc program is made for a component.
