Ford FACT Program Celebrates 20 Years of Technical Excellence

Ford Motor Company, a hallmark of American engineering and innovation, has driven the automotive industry forward since the Model T era. From cutting‑edge trucks and SUVs to modern hybrids, Ford’s commitment to technology keeps it at the forefront of the market.

Recognizing the demand for skilled technicians, Ford partnered with Universal Technical Institute (UTI) 20 years ago to launch the Ford Accelerated Credential Training (FACT) program. This 15‑week, intensive curriculum equips aspiring technicians with hands‑on experience and the credentials they need to thrive in Ford’s global dealer network. 1

Since 2000, UTI’s labs nationwide have provided students with access to Ford’s latest technology, ensuring they graduate ready for roles in over 3,200 Ford and Lincoln dealerships across the United States.

Continue reading to discover the FACT program’s history, its evolution with automotive technology, and why it remains the gold standard for technician training.

The Origin of the Ford‑UTI Partnership

The collaboration began in 1999 when UTI’s Vice President of Industries met a Ford representative at a conference. A simple handshake and a napkin sketch soon blossomed into the FACT program, first launched at UTI Avondale before expanding to nine campuses nationwide.

Over two decades, the partnership has matured into a robust training pipeline that has already prepared more than 26,000 students for automotive careers.

About the Ford FACT Program

UTI’s FACT program offers an authorized, Ford‑approved curriculum that fast‑tracks students into the industry. Within 15 weeks, participants train on a broad portfolio of Ford models, earn up to 11 instructor‑led Ford Specialty Technical Training (STST) credentials, and gain 80+ web‑based certifications. These credentials pave the way to Master Technician status.

Students must first complete UTI’s core Automotive Technology program, which provides a solid foundation before specializing in Ford’s unique systems. The accelerated course covers everything from advanced manufacturing techniques to precise repair procedures, using the same diagnostic tools employed by Ford dealerships.

Students begin with a Ford boot‑camp that sharpens diagnostic skills and dives into Ford’s diesel, fuel‑injection, and direct‑injection turbo engines. Current models, such as the Lincoln Continental equipped with the latest tech package, are also part of the hands‑on experience.

Beyond technical training, FACT students gain access to exclusive dealer hiring events where they can network with recruiters and, on occasion, receive on‑the‑spot job offers.

Quick Facts About the Program

  2. Passionate Mentors: Instructors serve as mentors, guiding students through every step of their professional development.
  3. In‑Demand Skills: Graduates earn 80+ eLearning credentials and 11 Ford specialty credentials, covering electrical diagnosis, quick service, and light repair.
  4. Professional Network: Students connect with peers and instructors and attend exclusive dealer hiring events to meet prospective employers.

Adapting to Rapid Technological Change

Over the past 20 years, automotive technology—and Ford’s offerings—have evolved dramatically. The FACT curriculum has grown from an initial 9‑week course to the current 15‑week format to accommodate new vehicles and powertrains, such as the 6.7L and 3.0L Power Stroke diesel engines.

By training students with the same diagnostic tools used in dealerships, FACT ensures a seamless transition into the workforce and gives graduates a competitive edge.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Technician Training

Ford FACT has already made a lasting impact, but the demand for qualified technicians remains high. According to the National Automobile Dealers Association, the industry must replace approximately 76,000 technicians annually to keep pace with retirements and new roles. Yet, schools graduate only about 37,000, leaving a shortage of 39,000 skilled professionals.

Ford’s broader New Ford Tech initiative offers additional pathways for aspiring technicians, reinforcing UTI’s commitment to meeting industry needs.

FACT alumni often ascend to leadership roles—service managers, directors, and panelists representing 33,000 technicians across Ford and Lincoln dealerships—demonstrating the program’s lasting influence.

The past two decades have been transformative, thanks to the partnership between UTI and Ford and the dedication of countless students. Together, they’re poised to reach new milestones in the years ahead.
