From Music to Mastery: Patrick Sellers, UTI‑Graduated Porsche Technician
Curious about the path to becoming a technician at a luxury dealership? At 23, Patrick Sellers has already carved a niche as a Porsche technician at Blue Grass Motorsport, routinely handling repairs exceeding $5,000.
Patrick is a silver‑level Porsche technician and is on track to earn gold status next year, a milestone that would make him a 24‑year‑old Master Porsche technician.
His journey wasn’t instantaneous. While earning his diploma from the Universal Technical Institute (UTI), Patrick’s dedication, work ethic, and commitment to excellence propelled him forward. Read on to discover how he transitioned from a passion for music to mastering luxury cars.
From Musician to Automotive Technician
Patrick’s first career aspiration was music. He spent eight years honing his craft, believing a future in performance was in the cards. Yet, his true calling emerged when he watched UTI commercials on the Velocity channel (now Motor Trend) after school.
By his senior year, he reached out to a UTI admissions representative, who advised him to gain field experience before committing. Patrick spent six months at Pep Boys, then enrolled in UTI Lisle’s Automotive Technology Program.
Training at Universal Technical Institute
Patrick completed UTI’s core automotive curriculum and the Ford Accelerated Credential Training (FACT) program. “The classroom taught us what we’d immediately apply in the shop,” he recalls.
His favorite moment came during the first week of the electrical course—a concept he’d briefly encountered in high school but never fully grasped. The clarity of that week fueled his enthusiasm for the rest of the program.
The Road to Becoming a Porsche Technician
After graduating, Patrick relocated to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, for a six‑month Porsche Technology Apprenticeship Program (PTAP). Mornings were devoted to Porsche studies, afternoons to hands‑on work at a local Honda dealership.
Returning to his hometown of Sellersburg, Indiana, he joined Blue Grass Motorsport in Louisville, Kentucky—just 20–25 minutes from home. Patrick’s prior training meant he could hit the ground running, familiar with both paperwork and the dealership’s online technical menus.
As a “bumper‑to‑bumper” technician, Patrick tackles a variety of tasks each day—oil changes, tire alignments, diagnostic work, and more. “Whatever comes through the door is what we do,” he says, reflecting on the diverse experiences over his two years at the shop.
In a recent highlight, Patrick assisted with a repair on a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT valued at $1 million. He performed an oil change and removed an underbody panel worth $36,000, and was even allowed to drive the car afterward.
Words of Advice
Patrick emphasizes the importance of following one’s passion. He advises aspiring technicians to seek hands‑on experience—such as working at a tire shop—to confirm their interest before pursuing a full career.
According to Patrick, UTI’s intensive 1‑2‑year training can deliver industry knowledge that would otherwise take 4‑5 years to acquire through manufacturer experience.
When not working on Porsche vehicles, Patrick channels his creativity into building a custom motorcycle—a hobby that keeps his passion alive.
Patrick’s story illustrates that dedication and hard work, coupled with the right education, can lead to remarkable achievements in the automotive world.
