UTI Students Gain Exclusive Access to Volvo's Future Technology

Technology is reshaping transportation today, making the future of the industry closer than ever. Technicians who once focused on mechanical repairs now navigate advanced diagnostics, electronics, and electric powertrains.

At UTI, we equip students for careers in this rapidly evolving sector. Our curriculum builds a solid knowledge base that students can expand as they transition into the workforce.1

After completing our core program, students can advance into manufacturer‑specific training. The Volvo Service Automotive Factory Education (SAFE) program is one such partnership with a leading automaker.2

UTI’s close collaboration with Volvo keeps us up‑to‑date on the latest technologies, enabling us to deliver real‑world training that aligns with industry demands. Read on to discover how UTI supported the launch of Volvo’s new S60 and what it means for our students.

About the Volvo SAFE Program

Volvo, renowned for safety and reliability, seeks technicians who can deliver exceptional service. UTI’s Volvo courses prepare students to meet those expectations and earn the Master Volvo Technician rating.

UTI Students Gain Exclusive Access to Volvo s Future Technology

UTI is the only U.S. school offering an apprentice Volvo mechanic training program, positioning our graduates at the forefront of demand for skilled technicians.

According to UTI Volvo Instructor John Stuckey, “Our students in manufacturer‑specific programs build on their foundational education by immersing themselves in Volvo’s advanced technology.” He notes that graduates can safely service hybrid vehicles—a capability many seasoned technicians lack without this training. “It’s about staying current with technology,” Stuckey explains.

The Volvo program is a Manufacturer‑Paid Advanced Training initiative. Applicants must meet qualifications, interview, and be accepted. Offered at our Avondale campus, the 14‑week curriculum covers the XC60, XC90, T8 Hybrid, S90 sedan, and the newly introduced S60.

3 Things to Know About Volvo:

  1. Volvo recently launched a digital library that makes 50 years of crash‑testing data freely available worldwide.
  2. The automaker celebrated the 60th anniversary of the three‑point seatbelt—a safety innovation still ubiquitous in modern vehicles.
  3. Volvo’s first U.S. manufacturing facility in South Carolina produces cars entirely from U.S. suppliers.

Introducing the Volvo S60

The S60 is one of Volvo’s most dynamic models, delivering 415 horsepower and 0‑60 mph in 4.4 seconds while maintaining a comfortable, four‑passenger luxury environment. It blends performance with the brand’s hallmark safety features.

Only 20 units were produced in South Carolina to celebrate the new factory. Sold exclusively online, they sold out in just 30 minutes.

Several were built for training at the new plant, and a Volvo S60 has been delivered to UTI. SAFE program students will train on this vehicle, gaining hands‑on experience with its cutting‑edge technology.

Staying Ahead of Technological Change

Stuckey stresses that students must be ready to adapt and pursue lifelong learning. “Learning happens when you’re trained to do something and can apply that knowledge to unforeseen situations,” he says. Our programs emphasize foundational knowledge that students can expand as they enter diverse work environments.

“The best we can do is stay flexible,” Stuckey adds. Success demands drive, intelligence, dedication, and practice—but for those passionate about the field, it’s worthwhile.

What the Future Holds for Volvo

While autonomous driving gains traction, there remains a market for cars that are exhilarating to drive. “It doesn’t mean there won’t be a market for fun‑to‑drive cars,” Stuckey notes. Volvo balances need and want, ensuring it remains relevant wherever technology evolves.

Growing Opportunities for Technicians

The demand for skilled technicians persists as the industry shifts toward advanced diagnostics, electronics, and electric drivetrains. Older technicians are phasing out, creating a critical need for new talent versed in manufacturer technology.

Manufacturers seek technicians who already understand their products. UTI’s curriculum, especially the Volvo program, primes students for careers and opens doors with leading OEMs. “There’s no place in the industry for someone who can only turn wrenches,” Stuckey says. Opportunities now lie in advanced diagnostics and electronic systems.

Manufacturers rely on the next generation of techs to ride the wave of technology. If you’re passionate about the industry, now is the time to start Volvo mechanic training.
