From Garage Dreams to Volvo Service: Kendrick Cowart’s Path to Automotive Excellence

Get to Know Kendrick

Kendrick Cowart discovered his love for cars early, spending childhood afternoons watching his father repair and detail vehicles. These hands‑on experiences sparked a lifelong passion that eventually guided him toward a career in automotive technology.

Hands‑On Training at UTI

Choosing UTI‑Lisle was a natural fit for Kendrick’s learning style. The campus’s emphasis on laboratory work—especially the high‑performance engine class—allowed him to rebuild and modify engines under expert supervision. While studying, he balanced coursework with a weekend role as a general‑service technician, applying classroom theory to real‑world repairs.

UTI’s curriculum, which culminates in a 51‑week program, equips students with the technical breadth and problem‑solving mindset required in today’s automotive industry. Kendrick credits this practical focus for accelerating his confidence and competence.

Preparing for a Career with Volvo

After graduation, Kendrick relocated to Arizona to complete Volvo’s Service Automotive Factory Education (SAFE) program. The curriculum blends online modules with hands‑on labs, enabling technicians to master Volvo’s unique service protocols.

His enthusiasm for Volvos—rooted in childhood memories of his father’s black S60—deepened during SAFE. A standout moment came when he and classmates performed an oil change and software update on a donated Volvo. The exercise revealed a complex software issue, and Kendrick’s persistence led the team to a successful resolution, bolstering his confidence and problem‑solving skills.

The Importance of Doing What You Love

Armed with SAFE credentials, Kendrick accepted a position at Rickenbaugh Volvo Cars in Denver, where he now serves as a general technician. The move from the Chicago suburbs to a new city tested his adaptability, but he has since embraced the dynamic environment and the opportunity to connect with fellow automotive enthusiasts.

He often reflects on the saying, “Choose a job you love, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” For Kendrick, that philosophy translates into daily satisfaction and professional growth.

Transferable Skills

Beyond automotive repair, Kendrick’s education at UTI provided a strong foundation in mechanical and electronic systems. “Understanding how a car works makes it easier to grasp other machines,” he notes, highlighting the versatility of his skill set across multiple industries.

What’s Next for Kendrick?

Kendrick remains committed to lifelong learning. He plans to pursue welding certification to construct custom chassis for racing, while continuing to refine his diagnostic expertise.
