Having an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) in the workplace is an obvious choice. They’re simple, easy to use, and could save a life – whether it’s a customer’s, an employee’s, or even your own.

However, it’s important to select the right one. Every moment counts when someone is undergoing a cardiac arrest, so you need an AED that is dependable.

Value

Look beyond the price tag and consider the true cost of the AED. Less expensive units may require more frequent maintenance and replacement of consumables, which can cost you more in the long run.

Rescuer Support

The best AEDs on the market won’t leave users to their own devices. Instead, they’ll use voice and text prompts to guide rescuers through the process, instructing them on how to deliver chest compressions that meet American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines for CPR.

This feature isn’t just a nice-to-have – it can be the difference between life and death. Studies show that a victim of cardiac arrest is more than twice as likely to survive when rescued with a defibrillator equipped with real-time CPR feedback.

While it’s no substitute for training, an AED that provides this kind of guidance ensures that anyone using it can administer CPR, even if they have no previous experience.

Durability

Shock Delivery

AEDs either have automatic or semi-automatic shock delivery.

An AED with automatic shock capability will analyze the victim’s heart rhythm and deliver a shock whenever one is needed (after advising rescuers to stand clear, naturally).

A semi-automatic AED leaves that responsibility up to the rescuer. Rather than delivering the shock itself, it will tell the user when to press the button that delivers the shock.

Pediatric Use

An AED with standard pads might be fine for a factory, an office, or any other worksite that is only frequented by adults. But if you work in a school, daycare, library, shopping center, or any other site where children under the age of eight might be present, it’s smart to invest in an AED designed for pediatric use.

These devices are capable of adjusting the amount of energy used when defibrillating younger victims, ensuring that they get a life-saving shock instead of one that is too powerful.

Warranty

Check the terms of an AED’s warranty before making your purchase. Some manufacturers offer warranty protection up to 8 years, which will help you ensure the AED is ready when you need it and could lower your expenses if something goes wrong with the device.

A sudden cardiac arrest is a stressful situation for anyone present, and many would-be rescuers aren’t sure how they should respond when witnessing one.
