Understanding Bill of Materials: The Key Ingredient in Product Design

Every manufactured product—from a simple spoon to a complex spacecraft—has a foundational document: the blueprint. While the blueprint captures the design intent, the Bill of Materials (BOM) lists every part required to bring that design to life.

A single component typically doesn’t have a formal BOM. Instead, the blueprint’s notes section records the raw material and any secondary processes needed. When multiple parts come together, an Assembly Blueprint is created, and the BOM becomes the definitive list of all components—including nuts, bolts, and even adhesive strips—along with their quantities.

Key indicators of a mature product are found in the BOM. At a minimum, expect a clear description of each part, the quantity per assembly, and, ideally, a suggested source or commercial part number. Understanding the difference between a suggested source of supply and a directed buy is crucial; violating a directed buy can cause significant procurement headaches.

Look for a consecutive number in the left column; this should match a circled reference in the assembly drawing, confirming the part’s location. Remember, the BOM focuses on parts—process steps belong in the blueprint’s notes. A well‑crafted BOM not only lists components but also promotes best practices and uncovers hidden value.
