Würth’s MagI³C Power Modules: Precision DC/DC Converters for Adjustable Current and Voltage
Würth Elektronik’s MagI³C Power Modules combine a DC/DC converter with an integrated controller IC, inductors, and capacitors into a single, compact solution. The new MagI³C Power Supply Reference Design demonstrates how effortlessly an adjustable voltage or current source can be built around the MagI³C VDRM (Variable Step‑Down Regulator Module). Two additional control loops enhance flexibility and performance.
Designed for a wide range of applications, the reference board offers two operating modes:
- Constant‑Voltage mode: Set a voltage from 0 to 15 V with an adjustable maximum current up to 2.5 A.
- Constant‑Current mode: Set a current from 0 to 2.5 A with an adjustable maximum voltage up to 15 V.
The module accepts an input voltage between 7 V and 36 V, making it suitable for both low‑ and high‑voltage systems. On‑board LEDs indicate the selected regulation mode and any missing output voltage, while two potentiometers provide a convenient way to adjust voltage or current settings.
Practical applications include:
- Driver for white, infrared, or ultraviolet LEDs.
- Battery charger for lead, NiCd, NiMH, and lithium‑ion chemistries.
- Supercapacitor charger.
- Compact laboratory power supply.
By integrating the controller, inductors, and capacitors, Würth’s MagI³C Power Modules reduce PCB real estate and simplify design, while delivering reliable, precise power regulation for demanding electronic projects.
