Silicon Labs Introduces Pre‑Certified Wireless Gecko Modules Supporting Bluetooth Mesh, Zigbee, Thread, and BLE
Silicon Labs introduces a new line of secure Wireless Gecko modules that simplify adding mesh networking to IoT devices. The MGM210x and BGM210x Series 2 modules support Zigbee, Thread, Bluetooth mesh, Bluetooth Low Energy, and multi‑protocol connectivity, making them ideal for line‑powered IoT solutions from smart lighting to industrial automation.
Pre‑certified for North America, Europe, Korea, and Japan, the xGM210x modules cut RF design cycles, minimize certification risks, and accelerate time‑to‑market by several months.
Built on the Wireless Gecko Series 2 platform, these modules feature an Arm Cortex‑M33 processor, integrated software stacks, a dedicated security core, and a 125 °C temperature rating for harsh environments. The on‑chip RF power amplifier enables long‑range BLE applications that reach hundreds of meters line‑of‑sight.
The initial families include the industry’s first pre‑certified wireless modules optimized for LED light bulbs, and a PCB‑form‑factor module for ultra‑small IoT designs.
- The xGM210L modules deliver a custom form factor for LED bulb housings, a PCB trace antenna for extended range, high‑temperature tolerance, extensive global certifications, and low active power consumption.
- The xGM210P modules offer a compact PCB form factor, an integrated chip antenna, and minimal clearance, simplifying space‑constrained designs such as smart lighting, HVAC, and factory automation.
Security is built in: secure boot with a root‑of‑trust and secure loader (RTSL) protects against malware, rollback ensures authentic firmware, and OTA updates are supported. The Cortex‑M33 core incorporates TrustZone for system‑wide hardware isolation.
Additional security features include:
- A dedicated security core that isolates the application processor and delivers fast, energy‑efficient cryptographic operations with DPA countermeasures.
- A true random number generator (TRNG) compliant with NIST SP800‑90 and AIS‑31.
- A secure debug interface with lock/unlock for authenticated access during failure analysis.
Silicon Labs’ Simplicity Studio IDE, along with patented network analyzer and energy profiler tools, helps developers optimize wireless performance and energy consumption.
Samples and production units of the xGM210P modules are available now. xGM210L samples will ship in Q4 2019. The Wireless Gecko starter kit mainboard and Series 2 radio boards are available today.
