IPS2200: High‑Speed, High‑Accuracy Inductive Position Sensor for Industrial Motors

Renesas Electronics Corp. has introduced its first inductive position sensor designed specifically for industrial applications. The magnet‑free IPS2200 delivers exceptional accuracy and speed while remaining thin, lightweight, and fully immune to stray magnetic fields. These attributes make it an ideal replacement for traditional resolvers in motor control systems across industrial, medical, and robotics sectors.
“Customers can now design their own resolver replacement with a lighter, higher‑performance motor,” says Christian Wolf, Vice President of Renesas’s Automotive Sensor Business Division. “The IPS2200’s adaptability and reduced bill‑of‑materials cost enable faster time‑to‑market and improved overall system performance.”
The IPS2200 lets designers match the number of sensor sectors to the motor’s pole pairs, maximizing precision for both off‑axis (through‑shaft and side‑shaft) and on‑axis positioning. Its ultra‑thin, lightweight package—up to ten times slimmer and a hundred times lighter than conventional resolvers—simplifies integration and cuts material costs.
Performance highlights include:
- Industrial‑qualified operation in harsh environments, ranging from –40 °C to 125 °C.
- Sin/cos interface: single‑ended or differential.
- Voltage supply: 3.3 V ± 10 % or 5.0 V ± 10 %.
- Electrical rotational speed: up to 250,000 rpm.
- Programmable propagation delay of <10 µs.
- Built‑in sin/cos gain mismatch and offset compensation.
- Protection against overvoltage, reverse polarity, and short‑circuits.
- Digital programming via I²C or SPI.
Renesas offers off‑the‑shelf tools for custom coil design, enabling coil optimization in roughly 30 minutes. The IPS2200 is now available with pricing starting at $4.22 each for orders of 1,000 units, and an IPS2200STKIT evaluation kit is also on hand for rapid prototyping.
