Rivian Announces $5B Second U.S. Factory in Atlanta, Aiming to Produce 400,000 EVs Annually

Rivian has revealed plans for a second electric vehicle production facility in Atlanta, Georgia, marking the company’s expansion beyond its first plant in Normal, Illinois.

The new plant will represent a $5 billion investment, with production slated to begin in 2024. Upon completion, the facility is projected to manufacture 400,000 vehicles annually and create approximately 750,000 jobs, leveraging a sprawling nearly 2,000‑acre site.

"We’re thrilled to partner with Georgia on this new manufacturing hub, which will produce the next generation of products essential for scaling our business," said Helen Russell, Rivian’s Chief People Officer. "Our collaboration is driven by a compelling purpose and a commitment to building a collaborative environment that fosters belonging."

Rivian is currently accepting pre‑orders for its debut pickup truck, the R1T, and its electric SUV, the R1S. The company also holds a contract to build an electric courier van for Amazon’s commercial fleet.

In July 2021, Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund led a $2.5 billion investment in Rivian to accelerate product scaling. The Illinois plant will see an expansion of 623,000 square feet of storage and production space, enabling an increase to 200,000 units per year by 2023, according to the New York Times.

When Rivian first announced the new factory, several states submitted bids to host the facility. Atlanta was chosen for its logistical advantages, lower environmental impact, renewable energy availability, and alignment with Rivian’s company culture.

This announcement follows Toyota’s recent pledge to build its first North American battery plant in North Carolina, signaling a broader surge in domestic EV manufacturing.
