Toyota Announces First North American EV Battery Plant in North Carolina

Toyota has announced plans to build its first North American electric‑vehicle battery facility in the Greensboro‑Randolph area of North Carolina.

The company revealed the project at a press conference on Monday, with production slated to begin in 2025. Four initial production lines will supply lithium‑ion batteries for 200,000 Toyota vehicles per year.

As demand grows, the plant could add at least two more lines, enabling supply for up to 1.2 million vehicles annually.

Toyota is investing $1.3 billion, in partnership with its U.S. trading subsidiary, to construct the plant on a 1,500‑acre greenfield site. The investment is part of a $3.4 billion financing package announced in October, expected to create roughly 1,750 American jobs.

The site offers strategic logistics advantages: it sits on 1,500 acres with access to two East Coast ports, four international airports, two interstate highways, and national rail connections.

“The future of mobility is electrification,” said Ted Ogawa, CEO of Toyota Motor North America. “The Greensboro‑Randolph Megasite is the ideal location to turn that future into reality. North Carolina provides the infrastructure, a high‑quality education system, a diverse and skilled workforce, and a welcoming business environment.”

Renewable energy availability was a key factor in Toyota’s decision. The company aims to eliminate fossil‑fuel use at the plant by 2050, aligning with its broader sustainability goals.

The announcement also energizes regional efforts to attract major manufacturers, building on initiatives that began in 2015 to position Greensboro‑Randolph as a manufacturing hub.
