ETSIIT Technical Challenge: From Students to Entrepreneurs with Locaviewer
We developed two end‑user applications. The first allows parents to view their child in real time. The second is for nursery staff to monitor all cameras, manage parent access, and automate attendance control.
Final Thoughts
We faced two major challenges:
- Acquiring accurate RSSI values from a low‑cost Bluetooth device (~$5). We developed an algorithm that reduced positional error from 3 m to 0.5 m. Since Java lacked low‑level Bluetooth support, we interfaced Python (via pybluez) with Java to exchange data.
- Optimizing video encoding. Finding a library that exposed the encoded buffer proved difficult, and fine‑tuning GStreamer 0.10 on Raspberry Pi was challenging. Our final configuration delivers 3–5 s latency. Replacing the Raspberry Pi with an MK802 III—providing Wi‑Fi and a dual‑core Cortex‑A9—will improve performance.
RTI Connext DDS saved us significant effort by handling networking, serialization, and QoS. We thank our engineering school and RTI for the opportunity and resources that enabled us to tackle this business challenge successfully.
