DDS Foundation Unveiled: Strengthening DDS Standard and Community for the Industrial IoT

DDS Foundation Unveiled: Strengthening DDS Standard and Community for the Industrial IoT

This week, the Object Management Group® (OMG®) announced the launch of the DDS Foundation, a global community for DDS users, vendors, technology enthusiasts, and related consortia. As the commercial leader in DDS technology, RTI is proud to be a founding member and to hold two leadership positions: Chip Downing will serve as Vice President, Ecosystem, and I will serve as Vice President, Marketing.

The DDS Foundation comes at a pivotal moment. Fifteen years ago, DDS was introduced as a distributed data communication standard and quickly adopted by Aerospace and Defense for mission‑critical systems. Over time the standard evolved to meet new requirements—DDS Security (2017), DDS for XTypes (2012), and more—driven by real‑world use cases and the increasing power and connectivity of modern technologies.

Today the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is delivering a wave of data‑rich applications that demand scalable, secure, and highly reliable connectivity from edge to cloud. DDS has proven itself across thousands of deployments, delivering low latency, scalability, robust security, and consistent performance. That’s why it is the recommended connectivity layer in the Industrial Internet Connectivity Framework (IIC). DDS is already integral to autonomous vehicles, undersea robotics, oil‑and‑gas rigs, air traffic control, wind energy, and connected healthcare, to name just a few sectors.

Standards grow stronger when tested against real requirements. Use‑case needs spark discussions, which in turn inspire proofs of concept and drive new specifications. Large, engaged communities are essential to this iterative process.

The DDS Foundation now gives that community a dedicated home. It offers a forum for collaboration, networking, education, and best‑practice sharing, and will maintain a repository of existing use cases while identifying future requirements. Working closely with OMG and the DDS Special Interest Group, the foundation will help shape the standard’s evolution and enable innovative industry applications to thrive.

The foundation’s first public meeting will be held in Reston, Virginia, on Wednesday, March 20, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Aptly titled “DDS in the Real World,” the complimentary event will feature field case studies, a technical panel discussion, and an introduction to the DDS Foundation and its leadership team. We hope you can join us—and invite you to collaborate with RTI and your peers to shape the future of distributed, connected systems.
