NEVS' Revolutionary Car‑Sharing Initiative in Trollhättan: A New Era of Mobility

NEVS Revolutionary Car‑Sharing Initiative in Trollhättan: A New Era of Mobility

Trollhättan—a Swedish city renowned for its beauty, creativity, and forward‑thinking spirit—has quietly become a global laboratory for automotive innovation, says Nick Booth.

Once a hub of heavy industry, Trollhättan reinvented itself as a center for intellectual property. Its engineers pioneered hydropower technology, and the city was once home to the iconic carmaker Saab. Today, it hosts the headquarters of the National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) company.

NEVS is tackling a bold challenge: reshaping society’s emotional bond with cars. In the UK, vehicle choice still often defines social status. NEVS believes that a new paradigm—where ownership is less personal and more shared—can transform how we value mobility.

Rethinking Ownership

NEVS aims to become the first automotive manufacturer to reduce the total number of cars sold. By elevating vehicle performance and desirability, they plan to entice consumers to choose fewer, higher‑quality vehicles. Simultaneously, they are promoting shared mobility through a dedicated fleet of electric vehicles.

“If people truly love their cars, how many would be willing to share them?” asks NEVS executives. While some consumers may resist, many in Trollhättan support the city’s vision of a sustainable, environmentally responsible metropolis.

To explore this transition, NEVS partnered with the University of West Sweden. Researchers will evaluate the expansion of car use under the Sharing Economy, Smart Mobility Acceptance (SESMA) project—a five‑vehicle electric fleet designed to test shared mobility concepts.

Lars‑Olof Johansson, a computer science researcher at the university, cautions that early enthusiasm for smart cities and autonomous vehicles may overlook fundamental human attitudes toward ownership. “We need to understand how people perceive self‑driving cars and sharing services before scaling,” he says.

“Most cars sit idle 95% of the time,” notes Nadia Kabir, NEVS project manager. “Shifting that reality can reduce environmental impact and lower ownership costs.”

Embracing Shared Mobility

“Dare to share” is the rallying cry from Kabir. Beyond environmental benefits, shared ownership can halve personal transportation costs—a compelling incentive for drivers.

Trollhättan’s unique advantage lies in its film production powerhouse, Trollywood, which has produced internationally acclaimed films such as Dancer in the Dark, Melancholia, and Dogville. With a £700,000 (7 million SEK) budget, the SESMA project will need creative marketing to demonstrate the value of shared electric vehicles.

Despite its quirky name—literally “Troll’s Hat”—Trollhättan boasts stunning waterfalls, the Saab Museum, and the NEVS plant, showcasing the evolution of Internet of Things (IoT) technology for environmental protection. If NEVS can inspire residents to appreciate the town’s mythical charm, it can also transform their perception of personal vehicles.
