Solvay Supplies Avio with Advanced Composite Materials for ESA Vega Launchers

Solvay and Avio SpA have signed a long‑term agreement to supply composite and adhesive materials for a range of projects, including the European Space Agency’s Vega launch vehicles that deliver payloads into low Earth orbit.

Under the deal, Solvay will provide Avio with ablative material, RTM resins, and advanced adhesives. The company’s extensive heritage in space applications—particularly ablative materials for rocket nozzles and exit cones—has made its products a staple in numerous launch programs, thanks to their ability to withstand the extreme temperatures of rocket exhaust.

Avio boasts more than 50 years of experience in designing, developing, producing, and integrating launchers that place institutional, governmental, and commercial payloads into Earth orbit, all through its Vega rocket family.

We are excited to extend our partnership with industry leader Avio and continue to support Vega’s critical missions, explained Carmelo Lo Faro, President of Solvay’s Materials Segment. With renewed enthusiasm and investment in the global space race, our advanced materials will be key enablers for space exploration, space tourism, and the launch placement of satellite constellations. We helped put the first man on the moon and will be there for the first woman on Mars!

The long‑term agreement strengthens the relationship between our companies, added Sergio Colabucci, Avio Procurement Director. It also secures the supply of strategic products for Vega family launchers in the coming years, when the demand for satellite launches into low Earth orbit is expected to rise.
