Solvay Supplies Medical‑Grade Film to Boeing for COVID‑19 Face Shields

In response to the urgent need for protective equipment amid the COVID‑19 pandemic, Solvay’s U.S. office in Alpharetta, Georgia, has joined forces with Boeing to supply high‑performance, medical‑grade transparent film for face shields.

Boeing selected Solvay because of its extensive experience with advanced composite and adhesive materials across commercial and defense programs. The partnership enables the production of thousands of face shields, essential for hospitals and frontline workers in the United States.

Manufactured by Solvay’s Ajedium Films division, the thermoplastic film will be incorporated into Boeing’s manufacturing line. The film is produced from Solvay’s medical‑grade Radel PPSU (polyphenylsulfone) or Udel PSU (polysulfone), specialty polymers that are routinely used in medical devices for their sterilization compatibility and resistance to harsh disinfectants.

“We are honored to bring our product expertise to our customers in this time of crisis,” says Jeff Hrivnak, healthcare global business development manager for Solvay Specialty Polymers. “Boeing is rising to the occasion by producing more durable face shields in critical demand for our heroic healthcare workers, and we are proud to help make that possible.”
