Ultra‑Thin Nano Coatings: Precise Colour Control via Sub‑20 nm Layering

Optical Coatings

Most scientific and industrial optical components rely on thin‑film coatings to suppress ghost images, eliminate back‑reflections, and protect expensive equipment. Conventional dielectric coatings—layered assemblies of transparent materials each at least a quarter wavelength thick—are ubiquitous in lenses, mirrors, and photonic devices.

Nano Coating

Harvard University researchers have pioneered an ultra‑thin nano‑coating that alters its visible colour when its thickness changes by less than 20 nm. By depositing successive germanium layers onto a gold substrate, the surface can be tuned from a metallic gold to a pastel pink, then violet, and finally a deep blue.

How It Works

The colour shift arises from constructive and destructive interference of light waves within the absorbing germanium layer. A 7‑nm germanium film on gold reflects a pink hue; adding another 4 nm produces violet, and a further 4 nm turns the surface dark blue. Even a few atomic layers of thickness variation can dramatically change the reflected spectrum. Similar effects have been observed on silver, which can appear gold or pastel at specific thicknesses.

Applications

Because the coating process uses standard lithography and physical vapour deposition, it is scalable and cost‑effective. Potential uses include:

These advances demonstrate the power of nanoscale engineering to imbue optical devices with tunable colour and performance.
