Clariant Launches Medical‑Grade Laser‑Welding Polymers for Precision Device Manufacturing

Clariant Healthcare Polymer Solutions, based in Charlotte, N.C., has introduced a new line of medical‑grade polymer compounds and concentrates specifically engineered for laser welding. These materials support a Quality by Design (QbD) strategy that empowers medical‑device manufacturers to embed reliability and regulatory compliance into the earliest stages of product development.

Laser welding delivers unparalleled speed and robustness in medical and diagnostic applications. Unlike conventional bonding methods, it eliminates the need for surface pre‑treatment and removes the risk of solvent residues or adhesive leachables. The process also accommodates complex geometries with minimal joint stress, and the resulting parts can withstand repeated sterilization cycles.

Color selection is a critical determinant of weld success. The laser‑transmitting component must allow the beam to pass through, while the absorbing component must melt at the bond line. Traditional pigments—such as carbon black for dark hues or titanium dioxide for white—often fail to meet these optical requirements. Therefore, pigment decisions should be integrated early in the design phase rather than being left to marketing or later-stage teams.

To address these challenges, Clariant’s QbD team offers extensive expertise in pigment and additive selection across a broad range of polymers, including PP, ABS, PC, and PC/ABS blends. In partnership with laser equipment manufacturers, Clariant has developed analytical techniques that screen and identify the optimal color formulations for each application.

While masterbatch concentrates provide convenient color addition, they can suffer from uneven pigment distribution along the weld line due to equipment or tool geometry. Clariant mitigates this risk by offering both a concentrated masterbatch and a fully compounded, ready‑to‑use compound. The latter ensures uniform pigment dispersion throughout the part, improving weld consistency.

All Mevopur laser‑welding solutions are produced in one of Clariant’s three global facilities, each certified to EN: ISO13485‑2016. Comprehensive regulatory testing—including pre‑testing of raw‑material ingredients to pharmaceutical and medical‑device standards, drug‑material compatibility (DMF), and full formulation disclosure—provides an additional layer of assurance. Rigorous change‑control procedures further reduce potential risks.
