Borealis Launches Fibremod PP – Carbon/Glass‑Reinforced Plastic for Lighter, Cost‑Efficient Automotive Parts
Fibremod, an innovative carbon and glass fiber‑reinforced PP technology developed by Austria’s Borealis (U.S. office in Port Murray, N.J.), is now entering the North American automotive market from the company’s dedicated plant in Taylorsville, N.C. The facility, which began operations in 2019, is Borealis’s first North American automotive PP compounding plant.
The Fibremod family of products empowers automotive manufacturers to meet weight‑saving and process‑cost targets. By replacing engineering plastics and metal components with energy‑efficient, lighter PP grades, vehicles achieve better fuel economy and lower CO₂ emissions. These tailored carbon and glass fiber‑reinforced PP compounds represent the cutting edge in automotive manufacturing, delivering reduced weight, enhanced strength, and improved impact performance across a broad range of applications—from front‑end and tailgate modules to instrument panels and center‑console carriers.
According to Borealis, Fibremod compounds can serve as a superior alternative to metal and engineered plastics, offering unmatched design flexibility. The portfolio includes short‑glass, long‑glass, and carbon‑fiber formulations, each available with customizable fiber‑content ratios to let manufacturers balance strength, weight, and cost for their specific design requirements.
Fibremod products also support energy efficiency in manufacturing by lowering process temperatures and reducing energy consumption compared with alternatives such as polyamides.
