Custom plastic implants can now be fabricated using additive manufacturing that complies with ASTM F2026—the industry standard for PEEK polymers in surgical implants.
The filament, branded VESTAKEEP i4 3DF, derives from Evonik’s VESTAKEEP i4 G—a highly viscous, high‑performance polymer. Key attributes include biocompatibility, biostability, X‑ray transparency, and user‑friendly handling. It is manufactured in cleanroom environments and rigorously tested under medical‑grade quality standards.
Designed for fused filament fabrication (FFF), the naturally colored PEEK filament has a 1.75 mm diameter and comes on 250‑g or 500‑g spools, ready for use in standard FFF printers.
Alongside the implant‑grade version, Evonik provides a testing‑grade filament that matches the implant material’s properties but omits the regulatory documentation required for medical devices. This enables cost‑effective, tailored processing for individual printers.
