PEEK Medical Implants: Advanced Biocompatible Solutions for Spinal, Orthopedic, Cardiovascular, and Dental Applications

Medical Implants

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a high‑performance, engineered thermoplastic that has become the material of choice for a wide range of medical implants. Historically dominated by metals such as titanium, PEEK now leads in spinal devices, trauma fixation, cardiovascular grafts, orthopedic arthroplasty, and dental prosthetics due to its superior biocompatibility, mechanical properties, and imaging compatibility.

Spinal Implantation

For decades, PEEK has proven safe and effective as a spinal cage or spacer material. Patients suffering from spinal stenosis, degenerative spondylolisthesis, disc disease, and scoliosis report significant pain relief and improved mobility after PEEK implantation. Long‑term studies demonstrate low complication rates and durable performance.

Why PEEK?

PEEK’s elastic modulus closely matches that of cortical bone, allowing the implant to share load with surrounding bone. This bone‑friendly modulus reduces stress shielding, prevents bone density loss, and mitigates subsidence—key factors in successful joint and spinal reconstruction.

Radiolucency

Unlike metallic implants, PEEK is radiolucent, permitting clear X‑ray and CT visualization of the surrounding tissue. Surgeons can therefore monitor bone healing, implant positioning, and potential complications without interference from the device itself.

Trauma Fixation: Internal and External
Internal Fixation

Internal fixation devices—cannulated screws, intermedullary nails, hip screws, pins, and plates—are engineered to be biologically inert. PEEK’s inertness, combined with its excellent fatigue strength, makes it ideal for maintaining bone integrity during healing. Because PEEK is lightweight, patients experience less mechanical load and improved early mobility.

PEEK bone plates and fixation hardware offer superior fatigue resistance compared to stainless steel, ensuring long‑term stability. Their flexibility and stiffness are tailored to match natural bone mechanics, avoiding over‑constraint of the healing process. When removal is required, PEEK implants exhibit minimal bone ongrowth, simplifying extraction and preserving surrounding tissue.

External Fixation

External fixation devices, used historically since Hippocrates, stabilize fractures from the outside using bolts and wires. These are indispensable for open fractures or as a temporary measure before definitive surgery. PEEK components in external frames provide the necessary rigidity while remaining lightweight and biocompatible.

Cardiovascular

In cardiac surgery, PEEK anchors and tethers are integral to Less Invasive Ventricular Enhancement (LIVE). LIVE bypasses the need to stop the heart, as in Surgical Ventricular Restoration (SVR), by attaching two PEEK‑based anchors to the left ventricle and securing them with a PEEK tether. This technique restores ventricular shape and function with minimal disruption to cardiac rhythm.

Orthopedic

PEEK’s bone‑matching modulus and radiolucency make it an excellent choice for knee and hip arthroplasty components. The material’s light weight reduces joint load, enabling smoother movement and quicker rehabilitation. Its durability ensures longevity in load‑bearing applications.

Dental

In dentistry, PEEK is routinely used for partial dentures and implant abutments. Its high abrasion and compressive resistance withstand chewing forces, while its chemical neutrality prevents taste alteration and allergic reactions. Customizable aesthetics allow PEEK prostheses to mimic natural teeth closely.
