Novomer Achieves Breakthrough in Low‑Cost, Compostable Polymer Production

Novomer Inc., Rochester, N.Y., has successfully demonstrated its industry‑leading low‑cost polymerization process for compostable polymers that meet the circular‑economy requirements of major brand owners.

Rinnovo is a polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) produced through Novomer’s proprietary COEth technology, which converts ethylene oxide and carbon monoxide into lactones. A low‑cost initiator drives ring‑opening polymerization, and Novomer’s selective catalysts achieve the high molecular weights required for commercial applications.

Current sample production occurs at Novomer’s Rochester Innovation Center. The successful demonstration paves the way for the design and construction of an 80,000‑tonne commercial facility planned for 2022.

“As a company focused on scalable materials for the circular economy, Novomer has committed significant resources toward cost‑effective solutions to the plastic waste challenge,” said CEO Jeff Uhrig. “The rise in ocean plastic and microplastics demands a portfolio of solutions. Rinnovo lowers the cost barrier and gives brand owners confidence in scalable, compostable options.”

Rinnovo satisfies ASTM D6400 and the EU EN13432 standards for compostable plastics. With over 500 % elongation for blown film and tensile strength exceeding polyethylene, it is well suited for bags, labels, agricultural films, and waste packaging.

“Ultimately, Rinnovo’s mission is to deliver sustainable end‑of‑life outcomes and support broader initiatives to improve waste collection, composting, soil health, and emissions reduction,” added Uhrig.
