Safilo Transforms Eyewear into Wearable Sculptures with 3D-Printed OXYDO Collection
Italian eyewear powerhouse Safilo, the creative force behind iconic labels such as Dior, Fendi, and Elie Saab, partnered with OXYDO for its Spring/Summer 2017 capsule. The collaboration introduced a new generation of 3D‑printed glasses that elevate the classic Italian aesthetic into sculptural art.
3D printing is renowned for producing lightweight, complex structures—an advantage already embraced across industries for both function and form. OXYDO harnesses this capability to craft frames that feel like wearable sculptures, blurring the line between technology and high fashion.
The ultra‑modern silhouettes, achievable only through additive manufacturing, are produced at Materialise’s Certified Additive Manufacturing facility and refined with the multi‑step Materialise Luxura post‑production treatment, ensuring exceptional finish and durability.
By reinterpreting classic styles—round, cat‑eye, and more—through 3D‑printed geometry, the OXYDO Capsule Collection 2017 offers a disruptive, contemporary, and sophisticated take on Italian fashion.
New York‑based artist Francis Bitonti, who collaborated with OXYDO on design, explains:
"We focused on leveraging the capabilities of 3D printing to produce very fine ornamentation while keeping a very minimal silhouette. We were interested in how the next generation of ornamentation might look," Bitonti says.
