International Women in Engineering Day: Meet the Women Driving Innovation at Markforged

In honor of International Women in Engineering Day (June 23), we spotlight the female engineers who have shaped Markforged. We asked each to share their journey, the realities of working in STEM, and advice for aspiring women and girls.

Happy International Women in Engineering Day!

International Women in Engineering Day: Meet the Women Driving Innovation at Markforged

Maggie Su, Mechanical Engineer

When I joined Markforged, I was their first female engineer. I helped bring more women into our engineering teams, and we have benefited immensely from the diverse perspectives and skill sets they bring to projects. It’s often easier to bounce ideas and tackle problems with colleagues who share similar experiences. My advice: trust your intuition, but always back it up with solid data—numbers give you credibility.

Cat Pomorski, Associate Application Engineer

I grew up with two older brothers who are both engineers and a mother who is a science teacher, so STEM runs in my blood. I joined FIRST Lego League in 7th grade and continued with FIRST Robotics in high school. My key message: ask for help. There are countless resources for women in STEM, and you’re never alone.

Emily Yu, Customer Solutions Engineer

I’ve always wanted to be an engineer. Making things with my hands was my favorite childhood activity—Lego over Barbies, hands down. More women are entering STEM as universities and institutions emphasize gender equality. The success of tech companies hinges on diverse teams, and we’re at a pivotal moment where women’s voices are finally heard. We need everyone to step up and make a difference.

Michelle Chao, Material Engineer

An inspiring high‑school chemistry teacher sparked my love of science. I remember a lab where we identified an unknown liquid by observing reactions—discovering lead iodide and potassium nitrate was a thrilling moment. Today, the stereotype of the lone male scientist is slowly eroding as more women succeed and receive public recognition. I’ve been inspired by pioneering female professors who broke barriers, and now I teach classes where nearly half the students are female. Ignore the stereotypes and pursue your passion.

Michelle Gagnon, Associate Application Engineer

I loved science from a young age—especially space. STEM is challenging for everyone, but if you enjoy it, pursue it relentlessly. Experiment with different paths until one resonates. When you’re stuck, find a mentor for guidance. You’re part of a supportive community of women behind you.

Stephanie Ku, Content Engineer

It can still be challenging for women to be heard and recognized. However, the unique skills women bring are increasingly valued, and both genders collaborate to create new pathways into STEM. I’m grateful for every opportunity to work alongside women who inspire me with empathetic leadership, technical mastery, and boundless creativity. Take a chance on yourself—follow your passion, regardless of others’ expectations.

Jill Grier, Quality Process Engineer

I never thought I’d become an engineer until high‑school math and chemistry teachers told me I had the aptitude. Listening to them changed my path. Women are still underrepresented in STEM, but the gap is narrowing. It’s empowering to collaborate with successful women who break barriers. Discard stereotypes—STEM offers unlimited possibilities.

Darby LaPlant, Materials Analyst Intern

Working with women in STEM has been rewarding; we share similar experiences and feel comfortable around each other. To girls considering STEM: go for it! It’s not always easy, but ask questions relentlessly. Curiosity fuels learning, and passion drives perseverance.

Olivia Chong, Mechanical Engineering Intern

I’ve been a DIY enthusiast since childhood—designing clothes, recipes, furniture. Engineering is a natural extension of that creativity. Collaborating with women in STEM is inspiring; I never hesitate to ask for help. The journey is challenging, but mentors, friends, and family keep me moving forward.
